CHANDIGARH: The arrest of Paramjit Singh Bheora, an accused in the assassination case of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, has whipped up mixed feelings of both joy and grief in his father Jagjit Singh's heart.Bheora had escaped from the Burail jail along with Jagtar Singh Hawara on January 21, 2004. But Jagjit never believed this news.
He maintained that the police had killed his son.
"It's impossible for anyone to escape from the tight security of Burail jail by digging a 92-foot-long tunnel. They knew that my son would be released by the court ultimately, so they killed him," he had told TOI after Hawara's arrest.Disbelief was writ large on Jagjit's face even on Monday when he was told that Delhi police had arrested his son. "When Hawara was arrested, police had come to our place but today no one has come except for mediapersons. Therefore, I do not think that my son has been arrested," he kept repeating. It was only in the late evening that he believed the news when his son's face was shown on a news channel. Then it was joy, but soon it was tinged with grief for obvious reasons.Jagjit had filed a case against the jail authorities and administration for killing his son. Now, he is doing a rethink. "I will have to take back this case. Now, I will contact my lawyers," he said.He is also planning to meet his son. "I have spoken to my son Jarnail in Delhi, and asked him to find out how we can see Paramjit," he added.
